Young boys were also employed in the mines, as "breaker boys". These children broke larger pieces of coal with sledge hammers and sorted rock from coal once it had been been removed from the mines. They also opened and closed the doors to the mines in order to let the coal cars in and out. (Goode, 1997) Women were thought to be bad luck in the mines and were not employed there untill 1973 although slave women were used in the mines until the civil war. (Goode, 1973)
